Spring hazard reduction burning complete
(Fort McMurray, AB – May 11th, 2009) – Controlled hazard reduction burns in the Fort McMurray area are now complete, The Regional Municipality Of Wood Buffalo announced today.
“The 2009 campaign was very successful,” said Patrick Dube, Assistant Deputy Chief of Operations, with Regional Emergency Services. “Due to the great weather conditions, we were able to complete the program in very short time but with high efficiency.”
The annual controlled burns program started on April 27th and was completed on May 10th. The initiative is a joint effort between The Regional Municipality Of Wood Buffalo ’s fire prevention branch and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development’s forest protection division.
The burns take place to remove potentially flammable fuels, such as dry grass. The risk of wild fire starts in the Municipality is significantly reduced by removing these fuels.
The Municipality would like to thank the public for their cooperation during the controlled burns program. For more information, residents are encouraged to call Regional Emergency Services at 780-792-5500.
